Ex-VP Adeeb's family requests meeting with President Solih

The family of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has requested authorities for a meeting with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The request was made via a statement as the family believes authorities are barring Adeeb from receiving the adequate medical attention and treatment he requires.

The statement reads that the family has appealed on the state to arrange meetings with 10 senior government officials.

With the exclusion of President Solih, they are:

  • Speaker of Parliament and leader of Jumhooree Party, Qasim Ibrahim,
  • Former President and leader of ruling Maldivian Democratic Party Mohamed Nasheed,
  • Former President and leader of coalition partner Maumoon Reform Movement, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom,
  • Acting Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed,
  • President of the Anti-Corruption Commission Hassan Latheef and
  • Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen.

Moreover, the former VP’s family has asked for a meeting with the National Integrity Commission as well as the Maldives Medical Council.

The family’s main concern is that the doctor who treated Adeeb at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after he was taken back to prison on the 3rd of January despite being recommended to be kept in a “stress free environment” for six to eight weeks, was influenced.

Stressing that although he is a convict, the family stated that he deserves the rights guaranteed to him.

Adeeb was taken back to prison from the hospital on 19th January.

Following the transfer, his family had on the 21st of January stated that his transfer was done forcibly.

The family continues to assert that Home Minister Sheikh Imran Abdulla’s influence over the case is political and personal.

While he has been taken back to prison, he was released to house arrest for 36 days due to a health deterioration in November. Under the doctor’s recommendation, Adeeb was transferred to house arrest on the 27th of November 2018 and corrections officers had taken him back to Maafushi Prison on the 02nd of January. During his time under house arrest, Adeeb carried out various political activities including forming a party; he was also appointed as the president of the party- Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD).
