The Jumhooree Party (JP) does not wish to impeach President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, says party leader Qasim Ibrahim, refuting reports claiming as such.
Qasim, who is also speaker of the People’s Majlis, told a press conference on Monday that neither he nor his party have any designs on impeachment of the president.
The speaker said that there is no reason to impeach President Solih and that he does not intend to allow any unlawful or ‘underhanded’ activity during tenure.
Reports that a no-confidence motion may be submitted surfaced after President Solih supported Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed’s call to ensure a parliamentary majority for his party.
Qasim has described Nasheed’s call to ensure a majority for the MDP as inconstant to the unity of the government coalition.
Qasim accused the MDP of ‘casting aside’ his party after being successfully elected into office, and expressed willingness to work with other parties in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
