Two Bank of Maldives (BML) employees have been suspended over the theft of MVR 10 million from one of its accounts.

RaajjeMV understands that that the employees suspended last week are married to each other.

The married couple work at different departments and the man had done the financial transfer.

BML has not denied suspending the two employees.

A BML official has said that the bank has established policies and internal controls to catch illegal and unethical behavior and that they will notify the investigative authorities and take strict action against any misbehaving employees.

RaajjeMV understands that the MVR 10 million was not stolen from a customer’s account but was taken from one of BML’s own accounts on separate occasions. The account was for internal operations.

BML investigated the couple after a sudden change in their lifestyle and after other employees filed complaints. Their social media accounts have been deactivated since their suspensions.

It is not confirmed whether a report has been filed at the police service.
