Ballot boxes to be placed in eight places out of the country

The Elections Commission of the Maldives has revealed that voters in the upcoming Parliamentary Election will be given until 15th January to re-register.

At a press conference on Thursday, Elections Commissioner Ahmed Shareef stated that voters will not be given the opportunity to re-register after the voters list is publicized by the commission.

“We will be publicizing a voters list with addresses given in their ID cards. As such, we have informed atolls and city councils via letter, to finish voters re-registration process before 15th January” said the commissioner.

He further revealed that the ID card unit is currently processing re-registration.

Shareef further stated that the commission has on Thursday held discussions on specifics for placing polling booths at local resorts for the approaching Parliamentary Election, with the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) as well as the Ministry of Tourism.

As such the commission will be placing ballot boxes in resorts and detention facilities if 50 eligible voters complete their re-registration procedure.

Also, at the press conference Shareef stated that political parties will not be allowed to use the colors on the commission’s logo once they’re passed. The colors on the commission’s logo are turquoise blue and purple.
