Three weeks after the tragic death of a 7-year-old girl at a one of their sites, W Construction has had their licenses returned.

An official at the Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure confirmed this, adding that work at the site where the accident occurred is yet suspended.

7-year-old Rawshan Jian was fatally injured by a falling cement bag while walking by a building operated by W Construction on December 16th. After multiple surgeries, Rawshan succumbed to her injuries the following day.

W Construction, which had all their licenses revoked, said that the cement bag tore, while being raised by a rope, when it hit a metal pole on the fifth floor of the building. No Maldivian supervisors were on site at the time.

The company earlier said that it has been supporting the family of the girl and that they will ensure that such an accident does not occur again.

The official said on Monday that the state’s review of construction sites in the capital city is still ongoing; the Malé City Council said that they are to review conditions at 473 sites.

The ongoing program to inspect adherence to safety regulations at sites in Malé was launched at the behest of President Ibrahim Solih.
