Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has revealed that work to drain flood water in Thinadhoo island of Gaafu Dhaalu atoll, caused by heavy rainfall in the region, is still ongoing.

Revealing that non-stop rain showers have been prevailing over Thinadhoo island, MNDF stated that they had placed two pumps to drain water in the northern region of the island on Saturday morning. Stating that they are still working to drain water in the southern side of the island, MNDF further said that they have had to place sandbags at the entrance of two households to prevent the water from entering the houses.

MNDF’s southern area officers are currently active in assisting island residents as well.

Maldives Meteorology has also revealed that scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected over southernmost atolls.

Following the stormy weather that prevails over southernmost atolls, the National Disaster Management Center (NDMC) has even issued a statement cautioning public to be ready for possible flooding and to take preventive measures. Seafarers are also advices to be cautious of rough seas and strong gusts of wind. NDMC further appealed on the public to forward details of damages, if any are attained, through their respective councils.
