The R. Kinolhas council has expressed concern over the contamination of the island’s wells.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, council president Ahmed Hussain said that the contamination has gotten worse over the years.
Highlighting its unpleasant odor and color, Hussain said that the water would become unusable after days with no rain.
Hussain said the council and the relevant authorities have confirmed the poor health of the well water through a survey they conducted in the last four years and that a quick solution is needed due to the public health risk.
Highlighting the need for water supply and sewerage systems, Hussain said that the sewerage development project that former President Abdulla Yameen’s government that began in 2015 stopped in July this year after almost half of the work had been done.
He said that the previous government did not respond to their concerns after the project was halted but that they have hope that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will develop water supply and sewerage systems in the island.
