Ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has assured that it will give its full support in reforming the courthouse, after a recent press conference highlighted the corruption inherent in the Maldives justice system.
In a press release, the ruling party stated that it is deeply concerned over the issues highlighted by the the presidential commission on murders and disappearances.
At a press conference on Sunday, Husnu Suood, president of the commission, said that local gangs have tremendous influence in the justice system and that they have a say in picking judges they wish for specific cases.
He said that gangs have been using their influence to intimidate witnesses, tamper with evidence, release suspected terrorists, reduce prison sentences, and jail innocent people.
In the press release, MDP stated that this is a great hindrance to establishing justice and safeguarding citizens, and the party vowed to help reform the justice system and keep the courts independent.
