A local food retailer has been struggling to dispose of decaying stock from their storage site in capital city Malé, the owner of the site has told RaajjeMV.
Managing Director Ibrahim Fauzee, of the ABC Private Limited which owns the site where the stock is kept, said the retailer to whom the items belong has been unable to dispose of them.
Fauzee said that while the company has asked the state Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) to dispose of it for them, only one pick-up truck had been arranged.
Several residents in the neighbourhood have complained about the foul smell from the storage site. The company allowed the retailer to keep the stock at the site because the latter could not find another place to store.
The items in question are sacks of potatoes, Fauzee said; adding that they have asked authorities for permission to transport the items to the Thilafushi island themselves, but are yet to receive a response.
Fauzee called on authorities to arrange an easier way to dispose of large food stocks and said while incidents like these are bound to occur, they are ‘more than nuisance’ and could pose a health risk.
