MDP announces constituencies not included in primary
A primary vote will not be held for constituencies where only one candidate is to contest
Over 200 individuals are contesting in the party primary for next year’s parliamentary elections

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said announced 9 constituencies for a primary election ahead of next year’s parliamentary ballots will not be held.

The deadline for application to contest in the primary vote expired at 16:00 on Wednesday.

A primary vote will not be held for constituencies where only one candidate is to contest and the candidate will win a party ticket by default.

These constituencies are:

  • Hoarafushi
  • Baarah
  • Dhidhdhoo
  • Milandhoo
  • Alifushi
  • Mahibadhoo
  • North-Fuvahmulah
  • North-Galolhu
  • North-Maafannu

Over 200 individuals are contesting in the party primary for next year’s parliamentary elections. The primary ballots are to be held in January.

The People’s Majlis elections are to be held on 9th April, the Elections Commission has said.
