Over 200 individuals have applied to contest in the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) primary elections, as the deadline nears.

MDP announced that 232 individuals have thus far applied to contest in the primary, which will select individuals to receive party tickets for next year’s parliamentary elections.

A total of 79,800 individuals have the right to vote in the primary election, which is to be held on 18th January. The party received over 33,000 new members ahead of the primary.

The party said that it will be putting forth candidates to all 87 seats, which according to unconfirmed reports have caused disagreement with its coalition partners.

MDP chairperson Hassan Latheef said that they have not signed any agreements with said coalition partners for the parliamentary elections, while the Jumhooree Party has claimed otherwise.
