The seven-year-old girl who was crushed by a falling cement bag has undergone an operation on Monday and is still in serious condition, says Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
At a press conference on Sunday, Male’ City Mayor Shifa Mohamed said that the victim has serious injuries to various parts of her body including her head.
She said that Male’ City council’s jurisdiction had been weak in the past five years and that the government had been lax in monitoring the city.
Also, at the press conference, State Minister at the Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure Akram Kamaludeen said that construction companies have a huge responsibility when working on their projects.
The girl was hit by the cement bag as she was walking under a construction site in Male’ on Sunday morning. The company, W Construction, has since been suspended and its permissions revoked by the city council.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday night, city council member Ahmed Zameer said that the warning sign at the construction site had been placed against regulation and that it was given to the company for a separate project at a mosque.
Council member Hussain Shareef said they are now evaluating the construction projects in the city and plan to stop those that are against regulations.
The city council stated that this will be a coordinated effort with the planning ministry, the police service, the defence force, Maldives Association for Construction Industry (MACI), and other relevant authorities.
Also at the press conference, deputy mayor Shamau Shareef said that they currently have only seven supervisors for Male’ and vowed to hire more and closely monitor the city.
