Economic minister Fayyaz Ismail has said that the government would have to conduct surveys before deciding to implement a minimum wage.
In an interview with RaajjeTV, the minister highlighted the difficulty of implementing a minimum wage.
He said that they need to be certain that businesses are capable of implementing a minimum wage before making such a significant change.
Fayyaz said he has requested President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to establish a board on implementing the minimum wage and that they will soon appoint board members and begin their work.
He predicted that this would become the most challenging and obstructive initiative he undertakes since being appointed as minister.
Noting that numerous businesses went bankrupt over the prior government’s policies, he said that he will make sure that his work does not affect the businesses.
