The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will forward Maldives’ intention to rejoin the Commonwealth within a week, Minister Abdulla Shahid has said.

The cabinet decision to rejoin the Commonwealth of Nations was approved in parliament by votes from 62 lawmakers, including some who voted in favour of leaving it back in 2016.

Maldives left the Commonwealth after CMAG (Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group) investigated allegations of former President Abdulla Yameen violating the political rights of his rivals and threatened to suspend the Maldives if situation is not resolved.

The allegations surfaced after several leaders of the opposition to Yameen’s government were tried and jailed on criminal allegations deemed ‘politically motivated’ and through judicial proceedings widely considered unfair.
