Male’ City remains flooded in some areas after hours-long heavy rain occurred on Wednesday.

The rain which began on Wednesday morning did not subside until later in the evening.

The subsequent flooding in the streets had entered some houses and stores and also made it difficult to walk or drive in the capital city.

Authorities report that over 140 millimeters of rain poured onto Male’.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has been active in draining the water and has installed pumps at 14 points in Male’, which has significantly drained the water in some areas. Police officers and the red crescent are also active in relief efforts.

The national disaster management center has assisted eight affected families while two families are currently under their care after their houses became flooded.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, defence minister Mariya Ahmed Didi said the disaster management center is providing relief to the affected people while all MNDF officers have been assigned various work in the city.

Along with minister Mariya, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and other senior government officials have been observing the relief operations.

MNDF has stated that damage assessment teams are being deployed to various locations in Male’, which consists of scouts and girl guides.

The disaster management center has setup a relief center at Kalaafaanu School and has urged those in need of emergency assistance to call 115.
