Projects to develop water and sanitation systems in all islands across the Maldives will be initiated within the next three years, says President Ibrahim Solih.
Maldives’ newly sworn-in president on Saturday visited Dhiffushi island of Kaafu atoll to inaugurate the island’s water and sanitation system, which was built through a corporate social responsibility initiative.
Speaking at the ceremony in Dhiffushi island, Solih said that while access to such basic facilities are a fundamental right, only a few islands have fully established access to clean water and sanitation sewers.
President Solih said that a total of USD 102 million has been allocated to develop such systems in the outlying islands, and that projects to develop water systems will be initiated in 72 islands within the next year.
Solih highlighted how ensuring all citizens have access to said facilities was a campaign pledge of his, he intends to accomplish it during this tenure.
The president also applauded the Alifushi Thuthu Foundation, which was behind the initiative to build the water and sanitation systems in Dhiffushi, and said that the government will support such projects and businesses that contribute to community development.
