The Garden City University, based in Bangalore of India, has awarded former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom with an honorary doctorate degree.
The doctorate was officially handed over by Chancellor Dr. Joseph VG. In a tweet posted on Thursday, former President Maumoon thanked the chancellor and his institution.

The Maumoon Foundation was established on 26th January and provides scholarships for students to study various subjects ranging from areas such as Islam, education, heatlh, gender studies, and environment.
Maumoon is a prominent academic, having studied at the Buona Vista College and Royal College in Colombo, Sri Lanka, as well as the America University, and reading Islamic jurisprudence at the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
