The People’s Majlis budget review committee has on Thursday passed to allocated MVR 100 million to sponsor higher education next year.
Parliamentarians present at the committee had unanimously voted in favour of passing the amount. The original amount proposed for this purpose was MVR 50 million.
The funds will be given to the Ministry of Higher Education, one of five new ministries formed by President Ibrahim Solih. Prominent academic Dr. Ibrahim Hassan was appointed to head the ministry on November 17th.
The budget review committee had on Thursday also added MVR 25 million to the amount allocated for foreign missions, MVR 2 million to the amount allocated to the Family Protection Authority, and MVR 37 million to the amount allocated for the Department of Judicial Administration.
While the outgoing Finance Ministry had proposed a budget of 29.6 billion, with the increases being made, it is estimated that the final budget for 2019 may exceed 30 billion.
