No-confidence motion submitted against PG Bisham

A no-confidence motion against Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham has been submitted to parliament.

The motion was submitted on Monday, by South-Thinadhoo constituency MP Abdulla Ahmed.

Ahmed noted five points while submitting the motion to the parliament, including that the PG had supported politically motivated criminal charges against former president Abdulla Yameen’s rivals.

While the Constitution states that the prosecutor general shall be “impartial and independent”, a person appointed to the post must be approved by a majority of the total membership of the People’s Majlis.

While the parliament also has the authority to remove the prosecutor general, a Supreme Court ruling issued last year states that it will make the final decision on the matter.

Bisham was appointed as the prosecutor general in November 2015, after the removal of Muhuthaz Muhsin through a no-confidence motion.

Muhsin was later sentenced to 17 years in prison, after the court found him guilty of forging a warrant to arrest then president, Abdulla Yameen.
