Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim have returned from a medical trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Maumoon announced this return to Maldives via twitter on Thursday, thanking members of the Maumoon Reform Movement and ‘well-wishers’ for greeting him at the airport.

In addition, he thanked Maldives Ambassador to Malaysia, Mohamed Fahmy Hassan and the staff at the embassy "for the numerous courtesies" extended to him and his wife during the private trip.

Maumoon left to Malaysia on 23rd September for medical purposes after the Supreme Court issued a stay order on his jail sentence.

While in incarceration, doctors diagnosed the former president with a form of vertigo that made him prone to collapses.

Despite being asked to seek treatment abroad, correctional officers refused to grant it. Maumoon was given treatment in incarceration.

Maumoon was arrested alongside two Supreme Court justices for allegedly orchestrating a conspiracy to oust President Abdulla Yameen, his half-brother.
