PG’s request to review Nasheed’s case: first hearing set for next week

The Supreme Court will be holding its first hearing on overturning former President Mohamed Nasheed’s prison conviction on Monday.
The Prosecutor General has requested the court to review Nasheed’s 13-year sentence on terrorism charges.
After accepting the request, the court suspended Nasheed’s sentence, allowing him to return to Maldives after years in self-exile.
Nasheed was found guilty of ordering the ‘abduction’ of a judge during his presidency and was sentenced to prison in March 2015 in a widely criticized trial. He later secured asylum in the United Kingdom while on medical treatment abroad. The Supreme Court upheld his conviction in 2016.
The top court has also accepted requests to review the convictions of Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla, former defence ministers Mohamed Nazim and Tholhath Ibrahim, and former deputy speaker Ahmed Nazim.
