WAMCO to close off waste transfer station to illegal waste carriers

The state-run Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has said that it will be closing off the waste transfer station in capital city Malé to combat illegal carrying of trash.
WAMCO said in a statement on Thursday that carrying trash from homes and commercial outlets is a violation of waste management policies, which only allow WAMCO to collect and carry trash.
The waste transfer station at the northern edge of the capital city is the only waste drop site in Malé. Trash collected there is transferred directly to Thilafushi island, where all trash from the region and most of Maldives ends up.
WAMCO is a state-operated enterprise that holds itself especially to carry out waste management in the greater Malé area.
Last year, it had divided the Maldives into 10 domestic zones in a bid to systemize waste collection, and has been responsible for collecting waste from households in the capital since July, 2017.
