Shiham Mohamed, vice president of Maamigili island’s local government council, has been attacked by a group of assailants.

A resident of the Alif Dhaal atoll island said that the attack was carried out in public at about 10:30pm on Wednesday, while Shiham was traveling on his motorcycle.

“God willing, he was not seriously injured. Shiham is not native to this island but he is married to someone who is. If such threats continue, it will cause a public scare”, the resident said.

The source further said that Shiham had been receiving threats for some time and that they mostly come from known supporters of the ruling party.

He further said that the incident had been reported to the police, although the Maldives Police Service declined to comment on the matter at the time of publishing.
