Former President Mohamed Nasheed has made extraordinary sacrifices for the Maldivian people, says Adhaalath Party leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla.

The two opposition leaders met on Sunday, following which Nasheed called Imran “an inspiration” for his unwavering work for the country.

Both Nasheed and Imran were convicted on terror charges and sentenced to jail, separately, but the Supreme Court last week suspended their jail sentences.

In a tweet posted on Monday, Imran said that Nasheed “is someone that has made great sacrifices for the people,” adding that meeting him was “a great pleasure”.

This is the first meeting between Nasheed and Imran, since Adhaalath Party joined the opposition coalition’s reform work.

Imran also added that there is still a lot of work to be done together, to return Maldives to the right path.

In a tweet posted after meeting Imran, the former president applauded his work for reform, stressing on his refusal to take a step back.

The four parties in the opposition coalition- Adhaalath, Maldivian Democratic Party, Jumhooree Party and former Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction of the ruling party- had decided to back a common candidate for September’s presidential election, in their efforts to remove President Abdulla Yameen from office.

Multiple allegations have been raised against Yameen, including corruption and abuse of power.
