Court dismisses terror charges against former defence minister
Faisal was charged for having ordered President Abdulla Yameen’s detention in 2010
President Yameen was then representative of Mulaku constituency
The former minister has since denied all allegations raised against him

The Criminal Court has on Sunday declared that the terrorism charges raised against former Defence Minister Ameen Faisal are unproven.

Faisal was charged for having ordered President Abdulla Yameen’s detention in 2010. As such, he was charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, article 2 clause (b) – for kidnapping and taking a hostage.

President Yameen, then representative of Mulaku constituency in Parliament, was taken into police custody to Aarah island in Kaafu atoll on the 10th of July 2010. He was released nine days later.

The former minister has since denied all allegations raised against him.

Terrorism charges were raised against self-exiled former President Mohamed Nasheed in connection to this case as well. The Criminal Court has since nullified the charges raised against the opposition leader.
