While the opportunity for interested individuals to apply for the post of Jumhooree Party’s leader ended on Saturday, the party has revealed that the only applicant remains former party leader Qasim Ibrahim.
Jumhooree Party on Saturday announced that voting to appoint the business tycoon to the post of leader has been scheduled to begin on Sunday evening, at 1600 hrs.

The Jumhooree Party announced that it opened up the opportunity for interested individuals to apply for the post of leader last week at the party congress after the High Court on Monday overturned Qasim’s three-year prison sentence imposed by the Criminal Court after finding him guilty of bribery, making him eligible for the position that he has held since the party's inauguration.
High Court overturned Qasim’s prison conviction following his return from self-exile in Germany after being granted political asylum there during his medical trip. He returned after being released on bail.
On the 24th of October, the opposition coalition had decided to nominate Qasim, also the representative of parliament of Maamigili constituency, as parliament speakers, after removing sitting speaker Abdulla Maseeh.
