Will increase salary of lawmakers to MVR 150,000 if elected as Speaker: PPM PG Deputy Leader
Raheem had earlier announced his interest in running for Parliament Speaker
Lawmakers currently receive a salary of MVR 85,000
Current salary excludes an allowance of MVR 20,000

Abdul Raheem Abdulla, the deputy leader of the ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary Group and Fonadhoo MP, has vowed to increase the salary of lawmakers from MVR 85,000 to MVR 150,000 if elected as Parliament Speaker.

In a tweet on Wednesday, the Deputy Leader announced that he will be vying for the seat of Speaker in Parliament.

Following the tweet, he had followed with another tweet that promised a hefty salary increase if he were to get elected, as part of his manifesto.

“With the will of God, I will increase Parliament members' salary to MVR 150,000” translates a tweet Raheem posted on Wednesday night.

Members of Parliament currently take home MVR 85,000, excluding a committee allowance of MVR 20,000.
