Parliament closed since there is yet no work to be done: PPM PG leader

Opposition MPs claim pro-government speaker halted sittings after being unable to accept President Yameen’s electoral defeat

This year saw the least parliament sittings

The parliament would next work on the state budget

Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, the Parliamentary Group leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has said that the parliament is currently closed since there is yet no bill to be submitted.

Speaking to the state media, the majority leader said that while there is no work to be done in parliament, speaker Abdulla Maseeh has been discussing on beginning a new session.

Nihan also said that the parliament would next work on the state budget and that the session will begin before the proposed budget is sent to the parliament.

It is noteworthy that this year saw the least parliament sittings held with 11 sittings being held in the first session, 13 in the second, and no sitting in the third while work in the committees continue.

Lawmakers of the opposition coalition have claimed that pro-government speaker Maseeh halted the parliament sittings after being unable to accept President Abdulla Yameen’s electoral defeat.
