Maldives’ jailed former vice president Ahmed Adeeb is entitled to seek treatment for his medical condition and will be allowed to do so ‘as soon as’ president-elect Ibrahim Solih takes his oath of office, says MP Mohamed Musthafa.
MP Musthafa, who represents the Thimarafushi constituency in Maldives’ unicameral parliament the People’s Majlis, said this in a tweet he sent out last Thursday, through which he accused incumbent President Abdulla Yameen of having infringed on Adeeb’s rights as a human being.
The tweet translates to, ‘Adeeb too has the right to seek adequate health care, it is a right he has because he is human! It is not a right that President Abdulla Yameen can take away! Expect this right to be restored to his as soon Ibrahim Solih takes his oath of office”.
The former vice president, who is serving a decades-long jail sentence for multiple charges including an attempted assassination of the president and large-scale corruption, has been diagnosed with an internal cyst, kidney stones, and vision impairment from glaucoma since his incarceration in 2015.
After his family and lawyers released a statement and the matter became contentious, with it ultimately having been filed at the United Nations and scrutinized by Amnesty International, Yameen’s attorney general Adeeb poses a significant flight risk and will not be allowed to leave the country.
