All powers of the state are derived from and remain with the people of the Maldives, not with the Supreme Court, says prominent Maldivian Democratic Party member Mohamed Waheed.

Waheed, who spoke to RaajjeMV, regarding the ongoing case at the Supreme Court seeking annulment of the presidential votes held in September, said that the decision of the people must be respected.

“The constitution says as such, the people have the power. Not the courts, not President Yameen or his lawyer Azima Shakoor”, Waheed said.

Waheed said that attempting to annul the results of the ballots, which was a case submitted to the court on behalf of defeated President Abdulla Yameen, is an attempt to cause discord within Maldivians.

Waheed further called for the arrest and detention of the president and ‘anyone who continues to undermine the decision of the people and the rule of law’.
