Ex-PG and Magistrate Nihan to head into trial on Sunday morning
Trial for five separate charges, is to proceed on Sunday
Both were sentenced to 17 years
Court earlier rejected an appeal filed to release Nihan under bail

Muhuthaz Muhsin, the former Prosecutor General and Magistrate Ahmed Nihan who sat at Maamigili Magistrate Court, are to head to trial at 10:30 am. Sunday.

Trials are to proceed over five separate charges against the two at the Criminal Court. As such, charges on Muhsin for allegedly forging a document which implies that the former PG issued a warrant that the Maldives Police Service (MPS) had not officially asked for, will be heard at today’s court trial.

Charges on Nihan that will be heard today include the procurement a court order to arrest President Abdulla Yameen, on the 16th of June 2016 as well as for illicit actions that go against his responsibilities as magistrate and for abusing his power as magistrate.

Muhsin was Nihan were sentenced to 17 years in prison after being found guilty for conspiring to unlawfully detain President Abdulla Yameen, as well as forging an arrest warrant against him.

While Nihan’s lawyers had appealed at court to release him under bail, court had at a court hearing held last week, rejected the appeal as he is doing time after having been convicted on terrorism charges.
