Attorney Hisaan Hussain has said that the Supreme Court order on February 1 was legally valid.
She said this after the Criminal Court nullified bribery charges against Supreme Court’s Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed on Wednesday due to lack of evidence.
Hisaan told RaajjeMV that the state’s bribery charges had no basis, which was proven by the fact that state prosecutors had failed to put forth any evidence to prove it.
She said that this meant the controversial Supreme Court order on February 1, for which the justices were arrested, was legally valid and involved no corruption.
After the Supreme Court ordered the release of political prisoners and the re-instatement of opposition MPs to parliament in February, President Abdulla Yameen refused to abide by it and declared a month-long state of emergency in February to make mass arrests without due process.
Hisaan said that the Criminal Court’s ruling has confirmed that the President Yameen’s decision to declare an emergency state had no legal or constitutional basis, either.
