A young man was stabbed near the state-run Olympus theatre in capital city Malé on Monday night.
The victim sustained severe injuries, according to eye witness accounts who claim that there was significant blood loss. Photos of the incident show copious amounts of bleeding.
He was rushed to the ADK Hospital for treatment, RaajjeMV has been unable to obtain information of his status at the time of publishing.
Officers of the Maldives Police Service were stationed near the area and the hospital. The police did not reveal any details, but affirmed that the case is under investigation.
There has been a notable rise in the number of assaults in the past few months. The police said at an earlier press conference that these were the result of multiple conflicts between street gangs.
Last Saturday night, a 22-year-old was attacked several times with a sharp object in Addu City.
In August, 18-year-old Ibrahim Agil was fatally stabbed in the throat. Another 18-year-old has been arrested and remanded for the murder, pending proceedings.
There have been 615 cases of assault thus far this year, according to the police's statistics. In August alone, there were 75 such cases while there were 78 recorded last month.
