Anti-Corruption Commission has stopped the government from giving out land in the newly reclaimed Hulhumale' Phase II area.

While the Anti-Corruption Commission warned against starting new projects during the change in government, the outgoing administration recently announced its decision to give out 400 pieces of land from the newly reclaimed area in Hulhumale’.

Even though President Abdulla Yameen has 41 days until the end of his term, after being defeated by a wide margin in the recent election, the housing ministry announced on Sunday that it will be giving out land in Hulhumale’ exclusively to citizens registered to capital city Male’.

At a press conference on Sunday, housing minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that their new project aims to give out 1,000 square feet of land, with MVR 400 per square foot; the total cost of a piece of land being MVR 400,000.

The government, which has been marred by numerous allegations of corruption, was set to receive MVR 160 million from this project.

Minister Muizzu said that they will give out the land to the applicants who are the most in need of housing.
