Outgoing President Abdulla Yameen has lost leadership of Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) following the Election’s Commission’s decision to nullify the decisions made at the party's national congress last weekend.

Elections Commission took to twitter on Wednesday, announcing its decision to nullify the decisions made at the PPM congress on the 28th of September as it had not followed through on due procedures, as such, the commission will not be accepting the decisions.

While the EC has made the announcement, recently freed former strongman Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had also asked the commission to not pass the PPM congress as it was held outside party regulations as well as the Presidential Election Act.

PPM’s congress was held on the 28th of September.

While President Yameen was approved as PPM's leader at the congress, Azima Shakoor was appointed as the Vice President of the party. The other three members who vied for Vice Presidency were Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, Tourism Minister Moosa Zameer and Member of Parliament for Fonadhoo constituency, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, who is also a member of the party’s Parliamentary Group.

All of the posts will be lost following EC’s nullification of the party’s decisions made at the congress.
