Attempting to delay announcement of vote results is unacceptable: Ali Waheed

The disciplinary chief said that the Progressive Party of Maldives’ request is unfounded and that he is against it, especially given that the party has already accepted the result of the ballots

Waheed, who worked alongside incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s campaign team, said this after the party asked the Elections Commission that the announcement be delayed

Ali Waheed, chair of the ruling party’s disciplinary committee, has said that attempting to delay the announcement of the official results of Sunday’s ballots 'is unacceptable'.

Waheed, who worked alongside incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s campaign team, said this after the party asked the Elections Commission that the announcement be delayed.

The disciplinary chief said that the Progressive Party of Maldives’ request is unfounded and that he is against it, especially given that the party has already accepted the result of the ballots.

Waheed further said that the decision of the Maldivian people is immensely clear, and any attempts to tamper with it will cause additional pressure from the international community.

While a senior member of the party’s sentiments are as such, PPM’s parliamentary group leader Ahmed Nihan said in a party Viber group that there are discrepancies in the voter’s list.

Leaked screen shots show Nihan claiming that he has been receiving complaints that voters who registered to vote were included in lists for jurisdictions other than where they applied to.

Incumbent President Abdulla Yameen lost his bid for re-election by a difference of 30,000 votes, interim results show. The official results will be announced on 30th September.
