EC chief denies reports that PPM requested to delay announcing final poll results

Spokesperson Akram also refutes these claims

Rumors have also surfaced that MPS is to arrest Shareef

Reports surfaced earlier that the ruling party had requested EC to delay announcing the final results of Sunday

There will be no change to the date on which the final results of the presidential election held on Sunday, will be announced, revealed Elections Commissioner Ahmed Shareef

Responding to an inquiry by RaajjMV asking if the ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives had requested the commission to delay announcing the poll results, Shareef had responded that no changes had been brought to the date scheduled to announce the final result of the Sunday ballots.

When the station asked if the rumors that surfaced about Shareef’s possible arrest is true, Shareef refuted them as false information.

When contacted by RaajjeMV for further information, commission member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram stated that he had not received any such information as he has not been reachable through phone recently. However, RaajjeMV was unable to confirm the matter of PPM’s request to delay the announcement of the final results through Akram as he had not answered the station’s calls.

At a time when rumors have surfaced that the EC has planned to nullify the results of the Presidential polls, rumors also surfaced that police officers have raided the Elections Commission office. Speaking to RaajjeMV about this matter, Shareef stated that police officers frequently come and go from the building as they are the ones who are guarding the ballot papers as well as the commission.

Earlier, the commission had revealed that the final results of the election will be announced on the 30th of September, as per the constitution, or sooner.
