President Abdulla Yameen has conceded victory in Sunday’s presidential ballots to his rival, president elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
In a short address Monday afternoon, President Yameen said that he will serve out the end of his term and will work to ensure the smooth transition of power.
In his address, President Yameen, who lost to Solih with a significant difference in number of votes, met with his successor at the President’s Office.
While details of the meeting are unclear, Solih called on Yameen to immediately release political prisoners and unfairly imprisoned individuals.
In Monday’s address, the incumbent president noted several development projects undertaken by his administration and said expressed gratitude to those that supported him.
“I have consistently worked toward the socio-economic growth of the nation and hope to continue service to our community and country”, Yameen said.
President Yameen, during his address, also conveyed his sincere congratulations to president elect Solih.
