Joint Opposition Presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the opposition coalition has support from a majority of southernmost islands (Huvadhu atoll) in Maldives.

Speaking to residents of Nadella island in Gaaf Dhaalu atoll, Solih confidently claimed that the opposition will defeat incumbent President Abdulla Yameen by a large margin and that majority of Huvadhu atoll will cast their votes for candidate number two, Solih.

“What I have observed from Huvadhu atoll is very pleasant, we have majority of the atoll’s support” said Solih.

Highlighting that the extensive Huvadhu atoll comprises of 240 islands, Solih said that he will develop more resorts in the atoll during his tenure.

While 18 out of the 240 resorts are inhabited, about five resorts and two airports are currently operating in the atoll.

Solih, having arrived in Nadella on Monday, pledged to pave way for more opportunities for the works island residents carry out.

Nadella is an island bursting with support for former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. As such, ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) had received 52% of votes from Nadella island in the Presidential election held in 2013. However, it is believed that the majority of Nadella will cast their votes for Opposition Presidential candidate since Gayoom joined the opposition coalition’s reform efforts.
