Information would not have been passed to other entities through commission: EC
Opposition had filed complaint regarding calls from President's campaign office inquiring on voters information
'This matter will not be taken lightly, investigations will be carried out'
'There is a likelihood that voters information was leaked through political parties'

Following opposition coalition’s concerns regarding possible re-registration deception, Elections Commission has revealed that the commission does not believe voters registration information could have been passed to other entities through the commission, going on to assure that the opposition’s complaints will be investigated with utter importance.

Commission member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram said that the joint opposition coalition had filed a complaint with the commissioner that voter’s registration information had been passed to President Abdulla Yameen’s campaign office.

Akram said that this matter will not be taken lightly, going on to assure that if they come to identify the individuals behind these actions, they will be penalized accordingly.

Having said this, Akram asserted that although the commission is looking into the matter, he is guaranteed that this was not done through the commission and that there is a likelihood that this was leaked by political parties.

With this having been said, former Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Mohamed Aslam had revealed that re-registration forms of Maldivian residents in Colombo had recently been submitted to the commission with former MP Mohamed Gasam’s contact number written as their reference numbers as a local number. Aslam revealed that Gasam had been receiving calls through the President’s campaign office since Wednesday night to inquire on the information given on the forms.

Aslam had revealed that Gasam had been reached for information twice amid a meeting with the Elections Commissioner as well as while he was meeting with press.
