Naseer appeals candidacy rejection at High Court
Naseer, who had wanted to run as an independent, was rejected due to issues with confirming the information and signatures in his documents
Naseer submitted his candidacy application with 1,800 signatures and picked Sheikh Nasrulla Mustafa as his running mate
EC also noted that Nasrulla, who has been faced with several charges, has an incomplete police report

Hussain Naseer has appealed the decision to reject his candidacy for the presidential election at the High Court.

The appeal was submitted to the court on Monday.

Elections Commission (EC) stated that Naseer, who had wanted to run as an independent, was rejected due to issues with confirming the information and signatures in his documents.

Naseer submitted his candidacy application with 1,800 signatures and picked Sheikh Nasrulla Mustafa as his running mate. EC also noted that Nasrulla, who has been faced with several charges, has an incomplete police report.

While EC is no longer accepting candidacy applications for September’s election, Amjad Hussain, Naseer’s spokesperson, said that they submitted the appeal to get an opportunity to resubmit Naseer’s application after fixing the issues pointed out by EC.

The spokesperson said that EC had announced their rejection of Hussain’s candidacy on a Friday and so they were unable to obtain the necessary information from government offices, which were closed, to fix the issues immediately.

According to regulations, EC has to announce their decision on the applicant’s candidacy within 48 hours after they submitted their applications. After the announcement, applicants are allowed to appeal the decision at the High Court or Supreme Court within five days. Afterwards the court should come out with a verdict within seven days.
