The Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) has on Thursday said that they have forwarded their procedure on broadcasting electoral content to the Attorney General’s Office.
The procedure was established as per a recent amendment to the law on general elections. The procedures aim to provide ‘equal opportunity’ for candidates contesting ballots.
The procedures, as they currently stand, dictate that local broadcasters should give no single candidate precedence over the other, and that they must all be given equal air time.
MBC has said that it has spoken with the Elections Commission of the Maldives and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives in drafting their procedures.
The procedure further deals with the prices of selling airtime to candidates and political parties, and broadcasters need to publicly announce rates.
