Parliament has decided to shorten its second session and extend the third session and so hold sittings in September.

At Wednesday’s sitting, the bill was approved by the general purpose committee and passed with votes from the 26 members in attendance.

MPs from the opposition coalition had boycotted Wednesday’s sitting as well.

The bill states that the second sitting will be held from June 1 to August 16 and the third sitting will be from August 27 to November 30.

The current regulation states that the second sitting is held from June 1 to August 30 and the third sitting will be from October 1 to November 30.

It is noteworthy that the current 18th parliament has been highly irregular with some sittings being skipped and others being concluded early.

Opposition MPs have blamed the irregular behavior in parliament on pro-government speaker Abdulla Maseeh and have been boycotting the sittings ever since their no-confidence motion against the speaker, which had more than half the signatures of all MPs, was refused.

The bills in parliament are now being passed by around 30 pro-government MPs at the sittings.
