Maldives president calls Pakistan's Imran Khan following election win
 
He is expected to take oath as prime minister on August 11

President's Office said that the President spoke to Imran via phone, to congratulate him

President Abdulla Yameen spoke to the Prime Minister-elect Imran Khan via phone on Tuesday, following his win in the Pakistani general elections.

Reflecting on the long history of close and cordial relations between the Maldives and Pakistan, President Yameen expressed 'his firm resolve to work closely with Prime Minister-elect Imran Khan to expand the existing ties of friendship and cooperation'.

In addition, the President's Office said that President Yameen had also expressed 'hope and confidence' that Pakistan will achieve new heights of progress and prosperity under the leadership of the newly elected PM.

It said that Imran Khan thanked President Yameen 'for his kind greeting and good wishes'.

Imran Khan, the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, emerged victorious in Pakistan's general elections held last week.

Pakistan election officials on Saturday announced that Imran's PTI party won 115 of the 269 seats being contested in the National Assembly, while his nearest rival, Shehbaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz won just 64 seats.

Imran Khan is expected to take oath as prime minister on August 11.
