Mariya Ahmed Didi, the spokesperson for the Joint Opposition candidate, has said that the most important thing for now in order to save the nation from the current political turmoil is for citizens to re-register.
In a press conference at Salt Café on Tuesday, the lawmaker called on citizens to choose the location where they would be voting and to re-register to that location before the deadline on August 11.
Mariya said that senior officials at the civil service and government-affiliated companies are working with the government to re-register its employees and that people can only avoid it by re-registering on their own.
She also said that the initial Election Commission’s policy required photos in the voters list because that is what the majority of people want, and that while they have reversed the rule after claiming that it was a mistake, they had actually done it due President Abdulla Yameen’s influence.
She added that the current Elections Commission members are incapable of acting independently.
