“Betraying” those who had helped you reach top positions has become part of the climbing the career ladder, lamented Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
In a Twitter post on Saturday, the leader of the opposition faction of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) said those who has been part of this will be laughed at by future generations.
This comes at a time when the former strongman is being verbally attacked by former members of his government during his 30-year long rule, in the name of defending incumbent President Abdulla Yameen.
Self-exiled Jumhoree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim is also being attacked by his former collegues who are now senior members of President Yameen’s government.
Both Qasim and Gayoom’s endorsements had been key to electing President Yameen in 2014. They have since joined the opposition coalition, and are working closely with self-exiled Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and jailed Adhaalath Party (AP) leader Imran Abdulla.
The coalition parties are currently in discussions to field a single opposition candidate to defeat President Yameen in this year’s presidential election.
