Former Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz Hussain has criticized Civil Court Judge Mohamed Haleem's record, of most number of cases heard in a single day.

In a post published on his Facebook account, Faiz highlighted that the judicial system and courts "are directly linked with protecting the rights of the people," and that working to set a record "is intolerable".

He said that back in 1999, a Criminal Court judge had scheduled 67 cases for a single day, to mark the 9th of September. He said that the judge had given out guilty verdicts in 66 of the cases.

The former Chief Justice emphasized the judges began competing against each other then, after the introduction of the "Best Judge" award by the Ministry of Justice. He added that the Ministry was forced to "abolish" the award, after some judges took a vocal stand against it.

Last Thursday, Civil Court Judge Haleem set a national record, after hearing 153 cases from 8 am to 12 am, making rulings in 66 of the cases. He had spent an average of six minutes per case.
