MCS issues warning over rising negative press
No compulsion in giving a certain type of treatment

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has issued a warning, stating that they will take action over falsified reports on the agency.
The warning came amid rising negative public sentiment and press, following the death of an inmate, while under care of MCS and claims made by the family of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb. The family had alleged that authorities had attempted to administer an injection to Adeeb.
A statement released by MCS on Monday, MCS said they did not compel inmates to seek a certain kind of treatment. All consultations, it said, are carried out on request from inmates.
The statement added that as health care is a basic right, especially to inmates, the Service prioritized on it. As such, the Commission said they had published an article on 22 July 2017 on their website regarding health care for inmates.
In spite of this, the statement added there were multiple inaccurate reports on health care provided to inmates. MCS statement had condemned these narratives, adding they did not dictate to doctors what type of treatment should or should not be provided to inmates. As such, the doctor who treats the inmate is determined by the health service provider, it said.
The statement also noted that they will always seek permission from the inmate’s family prior to engaging in any course of treatment that requires permission from family. It added that MCS will always disclose the medical notes issued by doctors.
