Ayathulla Hussain, the MDP National Council President for the B. Hithaadhoo constituency, has alleged that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s primary focus during his tenure as Male' City Mayor was personal enrichment. He further asserted that the President lacks sincerity toward the public.
Speaking during RaajjeTV’s "Dhiveheenge Bin Dhiveheenah" (Maldivian Land for Maldivians) coverage, Ayathulla stated that President Muizzu must be aware of the public's opposition to the allocation of 500 hectares of land from Ras Male' to Eagle Hills. Ayathulla further noted that foreign investment is not a new concept for the Maldives, highlighting that numerous foreign investment projects have been successfully carried out in the country previously.
Ayathulla stated that the Ras Male' project must not proceed until its current framework is improved, transparency is ensured, and the specific benefits it offers to the Maldivian people are clearly established.
Furthermore, Ayathulla stated that investments in the Maldives are not granted for free even to Maldivian citizens, and therefore, Ras Male'—which was reclaimed using public funds—cannot be given away free of charge.
"This must be structured as a lease; it cannot be handled any other way. In addition to charging an acquisition cost, we have observed models in other countries where 35 percent joint venture agreements are established with the state to facilitate these deals. Therefore, our priority must always be to ensure that these arrangements are conducted in a manner that maximizes the benefits for the public."Ayathulla Hussain
Furthermore, Ayatullah criticized President Muizzu, questioning his sincerity and describing him as disingenuous.
You may recall that during President Waheed’s administration, when this individual headed the Housing Ministry, he demonstrated a complete lack of basic understanding. While it is standard practice in every other country to lay dewatering pipes underground, he chose to run them across the surface of Malé’s streets. To put it bluntly, we currently have a leader who is so profoundly ignorant and incompetent that he lacks even the most basic common sense required for governance.Ayathulla Hussain
Furthermore, Ayathulla stated that even after assuming the office of Male' City Mayor, the President's primary focus remained on personal enrichment. He further alleged that President Muizzu would prioritize his own interests above all else, even if it meant compromising the nation's sovereignty.
