The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged the public to take precautionary measures as deteriorating air quality poses significant short-term and long-term health risks to the human body.
According to the HPA, poor air quality is linked to serious health complications, including neurological disorders and cognitive decline. The agency further highlighted that exposure to air pollution increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, while also posing significant health risks during pregnancy and hindering the healthy development of children's lungs.
The HPA has urged the public to take special health precautions as several atolls across the Maldives experience haze. The HPA advised individuals, particularly those with respiratory conditions, children, and the elderly, to limit outdoor activities. The agency further recommended taking protective measures, such as wearing masks, if going outdoors is necessary.
Authorities have urged seafarers to exercise heightened caution when planning and undertaking voyages, as air pollution has significantly reduced visibility at sea.
